The Argentine Society of St. Louis, a Brief History
The Argentine Society of St. Louis is a non-profit organization (Section 501© 3) based in the Heartland of America. Established on January 11, 1991, by a group of compatriots, its purpose is to share Argentine culture with those inclined to learn more about the traditions of our beloved country. In addition, we offer support to Argentines living in the St. Louis area and to organizations based in Argentina. The Society does not align itself with any one political, racial, or religious group. Rather our mission is to help further the common good of all Argentines in St. Louis and to nurture understanding between us and other citizens of our adopted homeland.
Since its founding, the Society’s members have formed special interest groups which have become active in the St. Louis area. These activities have included reading groups, showings of Argentine movies, and a folkloric group that represented our country at international programs sponsored by local universities. The Society has also sponsored various concerts by Argentine artists to further share our culture. Twice a year the Society organizes picnic lunches in which our members and invitees share a moment of camaraderie as they enjoy some of our typical dishes. Our member, Cristina Santa Cruz, has edited and produced our newsletter, Ecos del Sur, which contains information and stories relevant to our community.
The Society has also been involved in supporting various charitable organizations and for the past 16 years has helped sustain “Hogar San Roque”, a home for disadvantaged disabled children in Capitán Bermudez, Argentina. The Society’s charitable contributions are also aimed at helping its own members via a special fund reserved for those in need of emergency financial assistance. In addition, we maintain a scholarship fund that offers financial assistance to college students.
